This module will focus on ecological modeling. We\u2019ll start by discussing how and why models can be used (and misused) in ecology. Over the first 1-2 weeks, we\u2019ll work through some simple mathematical models and gradually build complexity. Activities will focus on demystifying models and their underlying assumptions, sketching graphs, and performing simple analyses using algebra.<\/p>\n

Then in weeks 2-3, students will construct models to address their own research questions, culminating in short group presentations.<\/p>\n

We will be using breakout rooms frequently. Since you won\u2019t be able to see my screen during a breakout session, I have compiled all of the activity prompts in a separate file here<\/strong><\/a>. Please also take the pre-test survey that has been posted to eLC (< 5 min).<\/p>\n

By the end up this module, students should be able to:<\/p>\n

1. Understand how & why simple models can be useful in ecology.<\/p>\n

2. Draw insights from simple models with algebra and sketching of graphs.<\/p>\n

3. Confidently read articles in ecology journals that include mathematical models.<\/p>\n

4. Create a conceptual model that formalizes a \u2018fuzzy\u2019 research question and translates it into precise equations.<\/p>\n

5. Understand enough about modeling to feel confident seeking additional help or collaboration.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>
